Winter had to be one of my absolute favorite times to be in Yosemite. Fresh snow on the valley rim changes everything. The cold brisk air keeps your average tourist away and can leave the valley empty for exploration. Without their former leaves, trees become fresh works of art. With the sun in the southern sky, the colors shift to cool blues while warm light from the granite walls mixes on the valley floor. In short, it’s magical.
And I’m not the only one that knows that; just look at Kelly and Jordan here, keeping each other warm by the Merced river for their Yosemite Winter Wedding. I particularly like how this photograph captures the coldness of that day. Frost covers the ground, and the Merced gives us a nearly perfect reflection of Half Dome (something that just ins’t possible most of the year), while Kelly and Jordan are complexly wrapped up with each other, in both body and spirit. Of course, having the moon rise over the shoulder of Half Dome doesn’t hurt too.
Have you had the chance to visit Yosemite in the winter?
